ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: To investigate the use of flipped classroom pedagogy based on "Internet plus" in teaching viral hepatitis in the lemology course during the COVID-19 epidemic. METHODS: This study included students from the clinical medicine general practitioner class at Nanjing Medical University's Kangda College, with the observation group consisting of 67 students from the 2020-2021 school year and the control group consisting of 70 students from the 2019-2020 school year. The observation group used "Internet plus" flipped classroom pedagogy, while the control group used conventional offline instruction. The theory course and case analysis ability scores from the two groups were compared and analyzed, and questionnaire surveys were administered to the observation group. RESULT: After the flipped classroom, the observation group had significantly higher theoretical test scores (38.62 ± 4.52) and case analysis ability scores (21.08 ± 3.58) than the control group (37.37 ± 2.43) (t = 2.024, P = 0.045) and (19.16 ± 1.15) (t = 4.254, P < 0.001), respectively. The questionnaire survey in the observation group revealed that the "Internet plus" flipped classroom pedagogy approach can help enhance students' enthusiasm to learn, clinical thinking ability, practical application ability, and learning efficiency, with satisfaction rates of 81.7%, 85.0%, 83.3%, and 78.8%, respectively; 89.4% of students expressed hope that whenever physical classes resumed, the offline courses could be combined with this pedagogy approach. CONCLUSION: The use of the "Internet plus" flipped classroom pedagogy technique for teaching viral hepatitis in a lemology course boosted students' theory learning ability as well as their case analysis ability. The majority of students were pleased with this type of instruction and hoped that whenever physical classes resumed, the offline courses may be integrated with the "Internet plus" flipped classroom pedagogical approach.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric orthopaedics is a significant and difficult for undergraduate students to master. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we used the WeChat platform to combine the advantages offered by problem-based learning (PBL), case-based learning (CBL) and paper review teaching methods to establish a new blended online teaching model and demonstrated its feasibility and effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of a new blended pedagogical method that uses the WeChat platform and combines PBL, CBL and paper review. METHODS: We enrolled 22 students participating in the Department of Paediatric Orthopaedics. They participated in the WeChat blended pedagogy mode. Their departmental rotation examination scores were compared with those of 23 students who participated in the traditional teaching method. Moreover, an anonymous questionnaire was used to evaluate students' perceptions and experiences. RESULTS: The total average scores of students who participated in the WeChat blended pedagogy mode and the traditional teaching method were 47.27 and 44.52, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences between the online teaching mode and the traditional teaching method in terms of possessing professional accomplishment, gaining knowledge and promoting interpersonal skills (P = 0.07, P = 0.12 and P = 0.65, respectively). In terms of independent clinical thinking, self-improving capability and improving clinical skills, the scores associated with the WeChat blended pedagogy mode were 8.00, 8.00 and 6.00, whereas those associated with the traditional teaching method were 6.70, 6.87 and 7.48. The overall satisfaction with the WeChat blended pedagogy mode reached 100%. A total of 64%, 86%, 68%, 64% and 59% of students chose very large or large in response to the items concerning professional accomplishment, knowledge absorption, independent clinical thinking skills, English reading and literature exploring capacity, as well as interpersonal skills, respectively. Fifteen participants claimed that the WeChat blended pedagogy mode was less helpful to them with regard to promoting the improvement of their clinical skills. Nine students claimed that the WeChat blended pedagogy mode was time-consuming. CONCLUSIONS: Our study verified the feasibility and effectiveness of the WeChat blended pedagogy mode for undergraduate paediatric orthopaedics internships. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The text-assisted problem-based, methods traditionally used to teach nursing students cannot adequately simulate holistic clinical situations and patient symptoms. Although video-assisted, problem-based learning methods combined with text have shown positive results in terms of improving comprehension and cognitive abilities, some studies have shown these methods to be inferior to text-assisted methods in terms of promoting deep critical thinking in medical students. PURPOSE: This study was designed to assess the benefits in nursing education of video-assisted, problem-based learning using online multimedia technologies compared with text-assisted, problem-based learning using traditional face-to-face classes. METHODS: A quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group, preintervention-and-postintervention design was used. The experimental group ( n = 31) received video-assisted, problem-based learning materials with multimedia technologies (video scenarios, Google Docs worksheets, Google slides, Zoom cloud meetings, and e-learning management system) and weekly online lectures (100 minutes) for 4 weeks. The control group ( n = 35) received text-assisted, problem-based learning materials with traditional face-to-face classes and weekly lectures (100 minutes) for 4 weeks. The study data were analyzed using chi-square, Fisher's exact, and independent t tests as well as analysis of variance. RESULTS: At posttest, learning motivation ( t = 3.25, p = .002), academic self-efficacy ( t = 2.41, p = .019), and self-directed learning ( t = 3.08, p = .003) were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Video-assisted, problem-based learning using multimedia technologies was shown to be effective in increasing learning motivation, academic self-efficacy, and self-directed learning in nursing students. These findings have implications for the development and planning of contactless classes in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Notably, no intergroup differences were found in terms of problem-solving skills. Future studies should include in-depth reviews and assessments of the difficulties faced in producing problem scenarios as well as the methods of instruction.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The senior leadership course at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing includes both didactic and clinical components. The didactic portion delves into leadership topics and during clinical rotations the students witness nurses and patients navigate through complicated and emotional patient care experiences. METHOD: Structured, active, in-class learning (SAIL) activities in a classroom were used to connect didactic content with clinical scenarios. Different specialty-related clinical scenarios were presented to the students, and they were allocated a certain amount of time for discussion in small groups before sharing their outcomes with the whole group (think-pair-share). RESULTS: Student evaluations showed that the percentage of students who rated each session as excellent increased each semester and feedback remained overwhelmingly positive; the consistently identified area for improvement is the timing and we plan to lengthen the sessions to address that. CONCLUSION: Our team discovered that by shifting most of our simulation scenarios to SAIL, we provided the students with ample opportunities to speak in a dialectically rich environment about clinical scenarios while maintaining the interrelation between theory and practice. RESUMEN: La pandemia por COVID-19 obligó a las universidades a impartir de forma abrupta sus asignaturas en un formato en línea o semi presencial. Es así como el uso del modelo educativo Hyflex surgió como alternativa. El objetivo del presente estudio fue conocer la percepción de los alumnos y docentes sobre la experiencia en el uso de Hyflex en anatomía. Estudio descriptivo de tipo mixto con una muestra por conveniencia de 115 alumnos y 7 docentes que participaban en Anatomía Aplicada durante el año 2021 en las Salas de Habilidades del Hospital de Simulación de la Universidad Andrés Bello, sede Viña del Mar, Chile. La recogida de datos fue a través de un cuestionario de auto aplicación con escala tipo Likert de 5 niveles y la realización de focus group con guión de 9 preguntas semi-estructuradas. Los datos cuantitativos fueron analizados con estadística descriptiva y la aplicación del test Mann- White para comparar entre grupos con un P < 0.05. Los datos cualitativos fueron analizados mediante teoría fundamentada para identificar las categorías principales y subcategorías. Tanto los docentes como estudiantes tuvieron una buena percepción sobre el uso de Hyflex. En ambos grupos lo más destacado fue que posibilitaba el acceso a contenidos y actividades en línea que complementaban las actividades presenciales. Sin embargo, ambos grupos coincidieron en que no aprenden más en el formato en línea que presencial. Además, en las entrevistas de focus group emergieron dos categorías principales, la satisfacción (destacando las subcategorías comprensión de contenidos, aspectos administrativos, acceso a la información) y modalidad (calidad de aprendizaje, rendimiento, participación, recepción de la información y aspectos sociales). Hyflex es una alternativa para impartir los contenidos de anatomía, aunque los estudiantes y docentes perciben que la presencialidad es fundamental para brindar una adecuada experiencia de aprendizaje.


SUMMARY: The COVID-19 pandemic forced universities to abruptly teach their subjects in an online or semi-face-to-face format. This is how the use of the Hyflex educational model emerged as an alternative. The objective of this study was to know the perception of students and teachers about the experience in the use of Hyflex in anatomy. Mixed-type descriptive study was carried out, with a convenience sample of 115 students and 7 teachers who participated in Applied Anatomy during the year 2021 in the Skills Rooms of the Simulation Hospital of the Andrés Bello University, Viña del Mar, Chile. Data collection was through a self-application questionnaire with a 5-level Likert-type scale and a focus group with a script of 9 semi-structured questions. The quantitative data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and the application of the Mann-White test to compare between groups with a P < 0.05. Qualitative data were analyzed using grounded theory to identify main categories and subcategories. Both teachers and students had a good perception of the use of Hyflex. In both groups, the highlight was that it enabled access to online content and activities that complemented face-to-face activities. However, both groups agreed that they do not learn more in the online format than in person. In addition, in the focus group interviews two main categories emerged, satisfaction (highlighting the subcategories content understanding, administrative aspects, access to information) and modality (quality of learning, performance, participation, reception of information and social aspects). Hyflex is an alternative to teach anatomy content, although students and teachers perceive that attendance is essential to provide an adequate learning experience.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, relation extraction on unstructured texts has become an important task in medical research. However, relation extraction requires a large amount of labeled corpus, manually annotating sequences is time consuming and expensive. Therefore, efficient and economical methods for annotating sequences are required to ensure the performance of relational extraction. This paper proposes a method of subsequence and distant supervision based active learning. The method is annotated by selecting information-rich subsequences as a sampling unit instead of the full sentences in traditional active learning. Additionally, the method saves the labeled subsequence texts and their corresponding labels in a dictionary which is continuously updated and maintained, and pre-labels the unlabeled set through text matching based on the idea of distant supervision. Finally, the method combines a Chinese-RoBERTa-CRF model for relation extraction in Chinese medical texts. Experimental results test on the CMeIE dataset achieves the best performance compared to existing methods. And the best F1 value obtained between different sampling strategies is 55.96%.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to measure stakeholder satisfaction with our usual delivery format, which previously relied on a blend of didactic lectures and clinical skills sessions compared to a revised format, which had more emphasis on online learning. We hypothesised that the online flipped classroom (OFC) would facilitate delivery of content in the wake of the pandemic, and result in improved levels of student satisfaction and knowledge gain. DESIGN: Non randomised intervention study. Group 1 = Traditional delivery (TD) and Group 2 = OFC group. METHODS: A validated course evaluation questionnaire (CEQ) compared perspectives of teaching faculty (n = 5) and students with the traditional delivery (TD) of the 4th year ophthalmology clinical attachment and an OFC approach (TD n = 129 v OFC n = 114). RESULTS: The OFC group (n = 114; response rate = 24.6%) reported significantly reduced satisfaction with staff motivation of students and provision of feedback, compared to TD (n = 129; response rate = 17.8%). OFC students also felt it was harder to determine what standard of work was expected and found the course less beneficial at helping develop problem-solving skills. Students were dissatisfied with the level of choice afforded by the OFC, specifically how they would learn and assessment options. No significant difference in exam score was observed between the TD and OFC groups. For faculty (n = 5), there was no evidence of a difference between OFC and TD. CONCLUSIONS: Students indicated a preference for the TD compared to the OFC approach. However, both delivery approaches led to comparable student performances as determined by MCQ examination.

BACKGROUND: After the COVID-19 epidemic, the state has paid more attention to the clinical teaching function of affiliated hospitals of colleges and universities. Strengthening the integration of medicine and education and improving the quality and effect of clinical practice teaching are critical challenges facing medical education. The difficulty of orthopedic teaching lies in the characteristics of a wide variety of diseases, strong professionalism, and relatively abstract characteristics, which affect the initiative, enthusiasm, and learning effect of nursing students. In this study, a flipped classroom teaching plan based on the CDIO (conceive-design-implement-operate) concept was constructed and practiced in the orthopedic nursing student training course to improve the effect of practical teaching, and it is convenient for teachers to implement more effective and targeted teaching in the flipped classroom of nursing education and even medical education in the future. METHODS: Fifty undergraduate nursing students who practiced in the Orthopedics Department of a tertiary hospital in June 2017 were enrolled in the control group, while 50 undergraduate nursing students who practiced in the same department in June 2018 were enrolled in the intervention group. The intervention group adopted the flipped classroom teaching mode of the CDIO concept, whereas the control group adopted the traditional teaching mode. After finishing the department practice task, the students in the two groups completed the evaluation of theory, operation skills, independent learning ability, and critical thinking ability. They completed the evaluation of clinical practice ability in eight dimensions, including four processes of nursing procedures, humanistic care ability, and evaluation of clinical teaching quality for two groups of teachers. RESULTS: After teaching, the clinical practice ability, critical thinking ability, autonomous learning ability, theoretical and operational performance, and evaluation of clinical teaching quality in the intervention group were significantly higher than those in the control group (all p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The CDIO-based teaching mode can stimulate the independent learning ability and critical thinking ability of nursing interns, promote the organic combination of theory and practice, improve their ability to comprehensively use theoretical knowledge to analyze and solve practical problems, and improve teaching effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Medicine is one of the most demanding academic fields with an extensive curriculum that entails plenty of potential stressors. There is sufficient evidence that medical students are more prone to psychological distress when compared to their peer group of other disciplines. Despite the established need to prioritize resilience skills building within the medical curriculum, very few medical programmes in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA) proactively empower the students to help themselves in sustaining their mental health. The purpose of the current study is to explore the perception of medical students in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) regarding their understanding of, and personal experience with building resilience, and their engagement with the content of an innovative curriculum-based resilience skills building course, designed in alignment with the constructivism theory of education. METHOD: The current study utilized a qualitative phenomenological research design. The curriculum-based resilience skills building course, that was investigated as part of this study, is offered at a medical school in Dubai, UAE. A total of 37 students submitted reflective essays about resilience building, in general, and the respective course, in specific. The collected data was inductively analysed following a six-step framework. FINDINGS: The qualitative analysis generated three interlinked themes, namely: Awareness, Application, and Appraisal. CONCLUSION: This study showed that integrating a resilience skills building course into medical curricula is likely to be positively appraised by the students, where it raises their level of awareness and likelihood of proactively applying the learned concepts in their daily lives. This is especially true when the course is anchored in constructivism experiential learning theory and designed to foster self-directed learning.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the medical students' performance with and perception towards different multimedia medical imaging tools. METHODS: The cross-sectional study was conducted at the College of Medicine, Qassim University, Saudi Arabia, from 2019 to 2020, and comprised third year undergraduate medical students during the academic year 2019-2020. The students were divided into tow groups. Those receiving multimedia-enhanced problem-based learning sessions were in intervention group A, while those receiving traditional problem-based learning sessions were in control group B. Scores of the students in the formative assessment at the end of the sessions were compared between the groups. Students' satisfaction survey was also conducted online and analysed. Data was analysed using SPSS 21. RESULTS: Of the 130 medical students, 75(57.7%) were males and 55(42.3%) were females. A significant increase in the mean scores was observed for both male and female students in group A compared to those in group B (p<0.05). The perception survey was filled up by 100(77%) students, and open-ended comments were obtained from 88(88%) of them. Overall, 69(74%) subjects expressed satisfaction with the multimedia-enhanced problem-based learning sessions. CONCLUSIONS: Radiological and pathological images enhanced the students' understanding, interaction and critical thinking during problem-based learning sessions.

ABSTRACT

Team-Based Learning (TBL) can be easily applied to different learning outcomes in various courses. This approach builds community and provides peer support for students in both in-person and online learning environments. When used for formative assessment, it can promote student learning while reducing the quantity of grading for instructors. Five simple tips to provide structure and flexibility for the successful implementation of Team-Based Learning are described using an example of a recent second-year principles of genetics course.

BACKGROUND: Nursing students require learning strategies when studying pharmacology. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the prevalence of online self-study. The design of effective online learning materials has therefore become vital to nursing education. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to describe the active learning mechanism that helped nursing students learn pharmacology through interactive learning materials and to demonstrate that no increased cognitive load in nursing students when studying pharmacology using interactive learning materials. METHOD: We designed an active learning mechanism to help nursing students study pharmacology by using interactive learning materials. An experimental pre- and post-test design was conducted. The participants were second-year nursing students (age 16-17) in a junior college of nursing. Students were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 98) and a control group (n = 90). RESULTS: We developed multi-media interactive learning materials and an active learning mechanism to enable nursing students to learn pharmacology. The proposed approach not only improved learning achievements but also reduced the cognitive load of nursing students. CONCLUSION: The major contribution of this study exhibits a new approach to practice wherein active learning is incorporated into interactive pharmacology materials for nursing students. This can be attributed to the design features of "explanation," "quiz and feedback," and "encouragement." Our results aid the development of effective interactive learning materials for pharmacology for Taiwanese nursing students.

BACKGROUND: There is a call for instructional transformation in nursing education to include an innovative approach. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the flipped classroom method on student achievement and engagement in an associate degree nursing course. This study investigated associate degree nursing studies students' achievement and cognitive engagement under traditional learning (n = 141) and flipped learning (n = 130). This study was conducted in two first-year cohorts enrolled in their nursing fundamental course, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic respectively at a Hong Kong community college. METHOD: A mixed methods approach was used with quantitative (examination scores) and qualitative (semi-structured focus group interview) measures applied. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in final exam scores for the flipped classroom, all p < 0.01, with a medium-to-large (d = 0.60) effect size. Students commented flipped classroom method promoted their cognitive engagement and the benefits that contributed to such a positive student achievement included more peer interaction and more opportunity to apply their knowledge. CONCLUSION: This study contributed to our understanding of the effect of the flipped classroom method on student engagement in nursing education.

BACKGROUND: Undergraduate medical curricula often fail to integrate experiential learning methodologies. Thus, a pilot series of interactive pathology lessons was designed and implemented in an attempt to promote experiential learning. METHODS: Thirty pre-graduate medical students voluntarily participated in the interactive study groups at the First Department of Pathology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Medical School. A questionnaire was designed to investigate the satisfaction of students regarding their participation in pathology study groups and to identify the characteristics that shape students' perceptions of the foundations of medical education. Descriptive statistics (mean values) were used to describe the students' evaluations of the pathology study groups, and thematic analysis was conducted to investigate the data collected using open-ended questions. RESULTS: Interactions with the professor and the option of co-observing the slides using dual-view optical microscopes and virtual slides were each evaluated as "Excellent" by ≅ 95% of the students. Four overarching themes were identified regarding the core characteristics of medical education according to the students' perspectives: 1) educational background in medical education, 2) interaction with educators in medical education, 3) educational material in medical education and 4) assessment in medical education. CONCLUSIONS: The high rates of acceptance of the pathology study groups reflect the desire and need for active learning methodologies to be implemented in modern medical education. Nearly all the students mentioned the need for practical skill acquisition, the integration of theory into practice and ethics in medical education. The success of these optional pathology study groups highlights the need for similar modalities to be incorporated into the main medical education curriculum.

BACKGROUND: The flipped classroom (FC) is a well-known active learning module that activates the prior knowledge of students and promotes their cognitive skills during in-class activities. However, most on-site teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic had to be conducted online. The FC in our rehabilitation medicine clerkship curriculum was also shifted to online asynchronous lectures (OLs), without real-time interactions. There is no previous comparison of effectiveness between these two methods. Therefore, this study aimed to compare learning outcomes and student satisfaction in both FC and OL models. METHODS: The study design was a historically controlled study. A physical modality was chosen for the content. The FC group (n = 233), in the academic years 2018 and 2019, was assigned to perform a pre-class activity consisting of reading study materials. Thereafter, the in-class activity comprised a small-group case-based discussion. The OL group (n = 240) in the academic years 2020 and 2021 followed an online model during the COVID-19 lockdown. They were also asked to read the online materials and then watch a self-paced recorded lecture video on Learning Management Systems. The learning outcomes, including their multiple-choice questions (MCQs) scores, final exam scores, grade points, and letter grades, were evaluated. Their overall course satisfaction ratings were also collected. RESULTS: The OL group had an overall higher MCQ score for the physical modality portion than the FC group (p = 0.047). The median (lower quartile, upper quartile) of the total 50-MCQ scores were 34 (31, 37) in the OL group and 33 (29, 36) in the FC group (p = 0.007). The median final exam scores of the OL and FC groups were 69.5 and 68.3, respectively (p = 0.026). The median grade points and the letter grades were not significantly different between the groups. The proportions of satisfaction were significantly higher in the FC group than in the OL group. CONCLUSIONS: The OL group revealed significantly higher learning outcomes than the FC group. However, the FC group showed more satisfaction with interactivity than the OL group. The authors are of the view that a combination of both FC and OL methods will likely result in better outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Online teaching and learning have been in place for the last two decades. COVID-19 pandemic has intensely augmented institutions towards implementation of online teaching. Literature reported benefits of online learning including flexibility and self-direction. In addition, researchers reported that virtual learning pedagogy is encouraging, as it mainly inspires lifelong learning due to its self-paced and self-directed instruction. Flipped classroom is an active pedagogical instructional strategy that uses online resources external to the classroom, and then employs small group pedagogies within the classroom. Flipped classroom strategy allows use of lecture time for active learning activities. This active model restructures the traditional lecture paradigm, in that students acquire basic course content before coming to the classroom, while class time is dedicated for problem solving learning activities. Flipped classroom utilizes time in student interaction sometimes one to one, addressing to their concerns and queries regarding the content. This strategy gives opportunity to the teachers to share their relevant real-life experiences and design small group problem solving activities.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The COVID-19 pandemic forced many institutions to move Team-Based Learning to an online format. The primary aim of this study is to examine the performance of undergraduate nursing students on tRAT and iRAT during online TBL. The secondary aims are to evaluate the students' attitudes and their accountability, preferences and satisfaction with online TBL. METHODS: The study employed a one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design. The primary outcome was evaluated by comparing the students' average scores in the tRAT versus the iRAT in each online TBL session. The secondary outcomes were evaluated through the questionnaire designed by Parmelee et al. (2009) and the Team-Based Learning Student Assessment Instrument (TBL-SAI) (Mennenga, 2012). RESULTS: A statistically significant improvement was identified between tRAT and iRAT performances in all online TBL sessions (p<0.001). Students' satisfaction with team experience showed a statistically significant increase (p=0.003). Participants considered the peer evaluation to be fair (p<0.001), although it didn't encourage them to study more (p=0.028). Finally, students felt they were able to make the right decisions (p<0.001). The mean scores for accountability (m=30±3.7) and preferences for TBL (m=51.8±6.3) were higher than their neutral values (n=24; n=48). Students' satisfaction was neutral (m=27.8±5, n=27). CONCLUSIONS: In online TBL, teamwork has improved individual performances and has been appreciated by the participants. The online TBL had a positive effect on the accountability of students who preferred it to frontal lectures.

ABSTRACT

A global pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus that started in 2020 and has wreaked havoc on humanity still ravages up until now. As a result, the negative impact of travel restrictions and lockdowns has underscored the importance of our preparedness for future pandemics. The main thrust of this work was based on addressing this need by traversing chemical space to design inhibitors that target the SARS-CoV-2 papain-like protease (PLpro). Pathfinder-based retrosynthesis analysis was used to generate analogs of GRL-0617 using commercially available building blocks by replacing the naphthalene moiety. A total of 10 models were built using active learning QSAR, which achieved good statistical results such as an R2 > 0.70, Q2 > 0.64, STD Dev < 0.30, and RMSE < 0.31, on average for all models. A total of 35 ideas were further prioritized for FEP+ calculations. The FEP+ results revealed that compound 45 was the most active compound in this series with a ΔG of −7.28 ± 0.96 kcal/mol. Compound 5 exhibited a ΔG of −6.78 ± 1.30 kcal/mol. The inactive compounds in this series were compound 91 and compound 23 with a ΔG of −5.74 ± 1.06 and −3.11 ± 1.45 kcal/mol. The combined strategy employed here is envisaged to be of great utility in multiparameter lead optimization efforts, to traverse chemical space, maintaining and/or improving the potency as well as the property space of synthetically aware design ideas.

ABSTRACT

Anatomical education has a long and colourful history, ranging from the anatomical theatre and artistic flourish of the renaissance period to modern-day virtual reality. Over the centuries, the body has been taken apart and mapped in exquisite detail. We are now able to access virtual models of the body anywhere, anytime, which allow for unlimited dissection and manipulation. Despite this progress, the majority of anatomical educators continue to deliver anatomy in a laboratory setting, using hands-on learning approaches such as dissection of cadaveric material. These methods are robustly supported by educational theories, such as information processing theory and experiential learning but require students to be present in a dissection room with access to human cadaveric material.The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic forced anatomy educators out of familiar dissection laboratories and into unfamiliar and uncomfortable virtual environments. When moving online during the pandemic, active learning theories, which form the basis of face-to-face classes, were used to construct interactive anatomy webinars to replace the on-campus practical laboratory-based teaching. The focus of these webinars was on student interactivity, and visual content with drawing activities, breakout groups, virtual three-dimensional models, and identifying activities being integrated into each session. Student feedback showed an appreciation of the interactive nature of these sessions, and staff were surprised at how well the webinars delivered engaging and interactive teaching at a time of limited social contact. This approach was not only useful during the restrictions of a pandemic but could offer a complementary approach to delivering practical anatomy teaching as we return to blended and on-campus learning again.
